My family recently returned from a week spent in Orlando, Florida and boy am I exhausted!  We fit a LOT in to one week and most of it is documented in iPhone pictures.  I knew we would be on-the-go at a break-neck speed most days and carrying a heavy DSLR would not be an option for me.  The size and convenience of a smartphone just makes sense to me especially for a long day at a Disney Theme Park. elsa and anna frozen disney picutresI want my children to have the ability to pick up a photo album and reminisce as soon as possible.  Pictures with Elsa and Anna from Frozen did not come easily so I want my daughter to enjoy looking at them (without my phone handy) as much as possible.  I have a phone full of pictures so now what? photo book diy how toI want to share with you how I make a quick photo album of my iPhone pictures.  I’m sure I don’t have to add a disclaimer that these are not the professional custom albums I offer my clients and only what I use to save everyday moments with my family. I don’t display them as coffee table books or investment pieces and reserve them for my children.  My kids get excited when new books arrive in the mail and the best part is I don’t need my computer to create them!

I have 2 apps I primarily use. One is on my iPhone and the other is on my iPad:

Shutterfly for iPhone and Shutterfly Photo Story for iPad

You can find details about other Shutterfly Mobile Applications and Android HERE.

I also use Smugmug.com’s app quite often but it is because of the photo book feature for iPad that I use Shutterfly for making books from my mobile devices. Other companies to explore to print directly from your mobile devices: Mosaic, Postagram, Blurb, PostalPix and Photobin. I expect there will be more and more options popping up for personal phone printing.

What I do to turn my iPhone pictures into a Photo Book

First:  Go through and delete the pictures on your phone you do not want to save.  If you have a series of 10 pictures of the same thing trying to get the best shot, save only the best one or two of them.  You don’t need them all and it will create too much visual clutter and make things harder if you don’t do this step.  (I’m guilty of saving too much.)

Next:  I regularly upload iPhone pictures directly to Shutterfly using their iPhone app.  This is habit for me now and with Wi-Fi it happens very quickly.  I usually upload any photos taken from the day when I plug my phone in to charge overnight. Pictures upload into appropriate folders that I create and name.  For this last trip, my folder is named “2014 Orlando Trip” and all pictures from the trip go into that one folder.  You can name these file folders of pictures anything you would like.  Name them by date, event, activity, child, holiday, etc.  I keep my folders very general like “2014 Summer” for every day pictures and more specific for special occasions as in “2014-06 Dance Recital.”  I think of what kind of book I want to make when I name the folder.  You will note I have the year listed first because I have had my Shutterfly account for 12 years and I find it is easier to locate pictures if you can at least start with the year.  By using the specific folders, I have all the pictures for a photo book in one place when I am ready to get started. photobook 8x8I wish I could plan ahead and work on my books as I go.  However, my method is to make a book all at once in a single night while watching late night TV.  This is where my iPad comes in handy.  By using Shutterfly Photo Story for iPad I can access my Shutterfly account and everything I need for the book I want to make.  If you go directly to Shutterfly.com, the books available for design have more options and features than the iPad version so you might want to use a laptop and try it that way.  I will occasionally do that but because I am not trying to make great works of art, I find the iPad is easier for me to get the job done.  I just want a fast way to add to my children’s library of memories.  The iPad app will try to make the book for you based on the pictures you choose for it.  That is super fast!  I like to cram as many photos and notes on a page as I can so I usually customize it myself.

What size book should you use?  8×8?  8×11? 12×12? There is no right or wrong here.  It is preference.  Take a look at what is available and my recommendation is to choose a hardcover book for longevity and be consistent so future books can sit nicely on a shelf together.  I choose the 8×8 books mostly because that is what I already have and have been making for years.  I also love the square shapes and I feel like they are easier to fit into little hands for viewing.  They are rarely ever too tall for a bookshelf either.  The size of book is always the same for me but the style and way I create each book varies greatly. Be creative!

Whatever method or printer you choose, the goal is to get the pictures off your phone before they are lost forever on your hardrive or way up in the Cloud.  Where is the Cloud anyway?!  I think you get the idea!

Very important step:  Throw perfectionism out the window and just get going! This will be harder for some more than others.  Procrastination can be a problem when you don’t know where to start.  Work backwards by making your first book from something very recent (and not something 2 years ago).  Caption what is happening with pictures without the pressure of writing something beautiful or meaningful on every page.  I hope this helps motivate you to give it a try. Your family will love it!  Good luck! picture of photo book shutterfly album book 8x8Investment depends on what book you choose to design and if you add pages to the 20 that are included.  It can be as low as $25 or up to $75 if you make it a really thick book so I think somewhere in the middle of that amount is typical.  I will be posting information on other favorite phone apps soon.  I want to share how you can edit your own photo pictures and other easy ways to organize them.

How to make Shutterfly Photobooks

newborn brother siblings black whiteIt is always like stepping back in time for me when I watch baby boy clients grow into active toddlers and all of a sudden they become the BIG brother.  I can almost picture what is in store for this family with two little boys just a couple of years apart.  I never have high expectations of the toddler and newborn sibling picture that I take.  You just never know what might happen and I feel like whatever that moment holds is wonderful and will be cherished more and more.  One day big brother will be 12 like mine and you will laugh at how you thought he was so huge at 2 to 3 years old.  These two boys just happened to be a dream.  Little brother was determined not to go to sleep for me and I’m so happy we now have wide-eyed portraits of him.  Have you ever seen a newborn sit up and pose for the family photo? family newborn posed mariettaLittle brother did eventually go to sleep so we could get the popular curled up poses.  The longer I am in this business, the more I appreciate lifestyle photography and capturing the whole family together.  The relationships and moments are what we really want to remember and what I strive to capture in a beautiful way.

Newborn Photography Tip: When taking a picture of your young child and newborn, always have another spotter present.  Even though this big brother was a sweetheart and so agreeable, Mom and Dad were on each side ready to protect their newborn if anything went wrong.  No picture is worth putting a little one in harm’s way. Don’t take any chances or mimic a lot of the newborn poses you see online (which are actually composites created in Photoshop and not even possible in real life). newborn awake black whiteYou can take a look at my last post to catch a glimpse of his airplane birth announcements.

Red, White and Blue Clothing

The Fourth of July is one of those holidays that usually means family-time. It might just be a good opportunity to take some pictures of your family while you are all together and having fun.  Here are some red, white and blue clothing ideas so your family can show their patriotic spirit.  White with different shades of blue is a great base to start with so that you can add in smaller amounts of red.  Note how great the stripes look and it wouldn’t hurt to have lots of American Flags in little hands! It is the 4th so you can go a little crazier than usual with the color. 🙂

I hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July holiday and a week that moves at a slower pace that usual. Enjoy the family-time that you have. Oh, and enjoy the hot dogs too!  Take lots of pictures even if no one ever gets out of their bathing suit!

Gymboree and J. Crew have red, white and blue clothing options for children ever year.  A great place to start for patriotic holidays.

Spring Color Trend Atlanta Photography

Today was gorgeous in Atlanta and gave us a big taste of Spring.  So, before tomorrow when we flip around the temperature from 64 to 46, I have some colorful inspiration on what to look forward to this Spring. Waking into almost any clothing store you will be able to find colorful jeans with bright pops of color.  Go bright and bold this Spring.  Look for not quite neon colors but ones that are bright and clear.  Emerald is the color for 2013 (that makes me happy)!  I’m also very happy to see some color scenarios using grays and yellows. (visit my Gray and… Pinterest HERE)

Designer, Rachel Roy, created a Spring line of clothing with “a new balance pairing aquarelle pastels with vibrant pops of color — the contrast of Amethyst with Soft Shell, Bloom with Hibiscus, and Flax Linen with Candy Pink creates the emotion of unbalanced beauty.” Her favorite must-have item is a jacket in Limeade which I hope I am lucky enough to come across.

Try throwing an economical pair of colorful jeans into your existing wardrobe.  My favorite places to shop for them would be Gap, Old Navy and The Loft. It is fun to stay on-trend without breaking the bank.  If you aren’t bold enough for the pants there are plenty of bright and colorful jackets that will go with your existing jeans.

It is the perfect time for Senior Portraits. I love for my High School students to have timeless outfits that will never grow old for their Senior Pictures.  I also encourage doing something really fun and representative of their last year of high school.  My sessions include lots of variety and is a really fun experience. I expect to see many ice-blue jeans and other colorful outfits soon and can’t wait!

Happy Spring to you – even if just for today!  ‘Punxsutawney Phil’ (The Groundhog) did not see his shadow this year so we are definitely going to have an early Spring! (right?)

Spring Color Trend

what to wear spring coral

It is Wednesday so I guess that makes this a What to Wear Wednesday post.  It has been so cold this week! I like the above color scheme because they are appropriate for this time of year and also have a pop of color to carry us in to Spring.  I’m ready for Spring weather now! Change the coral to red and it is perfect for Valentine’s Day.  Note the thick textured sweater and ruffle skirt which are great for family portraits as they just add another layer of interest to a photograph.

I attended ImagingUSA this week.  It is the largest annual convention & Expo for Professional Photographers hosted by the PPA (Professional Photographers of America) and lucky for me it was in Atlanta this year.  I spent 3 days in educational classes full of info and inspiration.  I feel a bit overloaded and overwhelmed (and exhausted) but am looking forward to the new year and all it holds.  I was able to view in person the latest and greatest products the industry has to offer.  I have lots of new and exciting products I am going to carry this year especially for my Seniors.

I am inspired by a lot of people that don’t specialize in what I do and really enjoyed getting to hear many of them talk and share what they do.  Just a small group of my favorites are listed here in case you are interested.  The first was Robin Layton and you might want to check her out especially if you are into Pet Photography.  She doesn’t specialize in that either but has a new book and video out that you will love.  She has a very impressive resume but seems to have stepped away from a lot of it to follow what her true passions in shooting are. Matthew Jordan Smith and Brian Smith (no relation) had similar messages of following your own passion and always having personal projects to work towards.  It is easy to say that when you are very successful but they have all the years of hard work to back it up which I can appreciate.  It is always fun to hear Zack Arias talk on any subject and he didn’t disappoint.  I love his candid way of telling it like it is; Our industry is very difficult and…get over it.

Below are some of my Instagram pictures taken during the show.  I am fortunate to have several photographer friends in the Atlanta area you will see and have also included pictures of our get-together last week.  We shared info and made good plans for 2013.  Some of us specialize in different things but always have something to share that is helpful and inspiring.  I always say being a photographer is mostly an individual sport so getting the chance to work with other people in the same boat is really fun and encouraging.

What to Wear for the Holidays

Christmas is often the time when extended families are together.  I get a few requests every year to photograph families that have finally all come together for the Holidays.  It may be the only time it happens all year.  Whether your family portrait this Christmas is by a professional or on your own, it will really make a difference in the overall look if you take the time to coordinate the color scheme of your group.  Use this picture as a visual to have a clothing basis of creams, dark grays or black and tan.  Add a few pops of red or any bright color to tie it all together.

Click the above icon or here to see my Pinterest board of What to Wear.  Get lots of other clothing ideas for families that belong to other people as well as my own stuff.

On a more personal note, I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas.  I don’t cook much during the year and I make up for it the days leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas.  If you need me, I am in my kitchen.  It is exhausting!  Pinterest has opened up a new world of things to try but I have one go-to cookbook that I always use.  It is my Nana’s Calling All Cooks  cookbook that I inherited years ago after she passed away.  I can’t believe I actually found it on Amazon!  I highly recommend this book.  It has good ole Southern recipes straight from Alabama.  It has the kind of stuff you will find at any church potluck.  Mine is a little more special than what you will find at Amazon because it is falling apart and full of flour and sugar.  The page with my favorite dessert, Four Layer Chocolate Pie, has chocolate on the pages from when she used to make it for me.  I know she made it for me more times than I can count.

Thanks, Nana!

You can find more of my favorite recipes (or what I love the idea of making) on this Pinterest Board.  We have cookie exchanges coming up so yesterday was dedicated mostly to cookie making from scratch.  I think store-bought Oreos are just as good (to me).

Happy Holiday Baking AND Happy Birthday to My Mom today!

Mental note: now that I found Calling All Cooks  online, I will have to buy it for everyone next Christmas.
